An Introduction to Death, Dying and the Digital
Digital technology is widely recognised to have transformed the way we live – but has also transformed how we die. In this introductory training we explore some of the ways in which digital technology has changed the meaning and experience of death and how this impacts on professional work with bereaved people. The training will focus on social media, for example Facebook and Twitter accounts which enable ‘eternal life’ through memorialisation of the dead; ways in which digitisation is changing understanding and attitudes to death; gaming interpretations and impacts on people’s experiences of bereavement; historical context and implications for mourning. The training also discusses digital footprint and what practitioners need to know in order to offer practical help to bereaved groups. By the end of the training, delegates will have increased their knowledge and skill in the ways in which digitisation has transformed much of the experience of grief and mourning.
